Chopra’s King of Bollywood in German

MUMBAI: The German translation of Anupama Chopra’s bestseller King of Bollywood: Shah Rukh Khan and the Seductive World of Indian Cinema will be released on 30 January. The book is being published by Rapid Eye Movies, a distributor of Bollywood films in Germany. This is their first publishing venture.

King of Bollywood, published by Warner Books, has already sold over 10,000 copies in India. The New York Times ran a rave review calling it “a sprightly biography” and featured the book in The Editor’s Choice List, alongside books such as Philip Roth’s Exit Ghost.

Director Mira Nair commented that the book “is a bounty for cinema lovers everywhere,” while Oscar-winning actress Emma Thompson described it as “The ‘Easy Rider, Raging Bull’ of the Bollywood industry and essential reading for any Shah Rukh Khan fan.”

King of Bollywood has also been successfully translated into Hindi and Marathi. The Malayalam and Indonesian language translations are slated to hit stores later this year. Chopra has been invited to speak about the book and Bollywood at institutions such as The Asia Society and The Museum of Moving Image in New York, The Peabody Essex Museum in Boston and the New York University Film School.

Commenting on the German release, Chopra said, “I’m very excited about the German version of King of Bollywood. Germans love Bollywood and especially love Shah Rukh Khan. I hope they find my book as colorful, dramatic and engaging as our films.”
