Films for Indian Panorama at IFFI finalized

MUMBAI: The selection of feature and non – feature films for International Film Festival of India (IFFI) 2006 were announced by the juries for the Indian Panorama 2006. IFFI will be held at Panaji (Goa) from 23 November to 3 December, 2006.

The two juries have recommended 20 films each for the two sections of Indian Panorama. The Indian Panorama section of the 37th International Film Festival of India will open with Missed Call (English/Hindi) directed by Mridul Toolsidass and Vinay Subramanian, while the opening film of the non-feature section would be And the world remained silent directed by Ashok Pandit.

Madhur Bhandarkar’s Corporate has also been selected for the Indian Panorama at the festival. “Corporate has been selected for the Indian Panorama at the IFFI Film Festival. Out of the 96 Hindi films, panelist Saeed Mirza selected my film in the Hindi category. Corporate, which was in the last five missed the boat to the Oscars but I am confident that one day my film will be selected and win an Oscars for India,” says Bhandarkar.

The other Hindi film chosen is Banaras: A Mystic Love Story directed by Pankuj Parashar. Chitra Palekar’s marathi film Maati Maay will also be screened.

The juries have also recommended that the Tamil film Sringaram directed by Sharada Ramanathan and Sonam a film directed by the upcoming filmmaker Ahsan Muzid in an Arunachali dialect Monpa will represent India in the Asian, African and Latin American Competition section of the IFFI-2006.

The juries watched 96 feature films and 102 non-feature films over a period of 16 days to make the selection. These films are all produced between 1 August 2005 and 31 August 2006.

This year the feature films jury was headed by filmmaker Saeed Akhtar Mirza and had its members in Tamil filmmaker Vasanth S M, actress from Marathi cinema Aditi Deshpandey, veteran filmmaker from Assam Pulak Gogoi and film festival organizers George Mathew from Kerala and U Radhakrishnan from Delhi as members.

The non-feature films jury was headed by veteran film director from Bengal Raja Mitra and had Jamia Mass Communication Research Centre director Iftekhar Ahmed, and filmmakers like Vinod Ganatra and Anjan Bose as members.

The aim of the Indian Panorama is to select feature and non-feature films of cinematic, thematic and aesthetic excellence for the promotion of film art through non profit screenings of these films in International Film Festivals in India and abroad, in Indian Film Weeks held under various exchange programmes and Cultural Exchange Programmes, specialized Indian films festivals abroad and in special Panorama Festivals in India.
