Fox Star Studios to release Avatar in Tamil

MUMBAI: Fox Star Studios India will now be releasing the 3D version of Avatar in Tamil, making it the first  3D Hollywood film to be released in Tamil.

While Hollywood films like X-Men Origins: Wolverine & 2012 have been dubbed in local languages like Hindi, Tamil & Telegu, 3D Hollywood films like Ice Age 3 were only dubbed in Hindi so far.

Fox Star Studios India CEO Vijay Singh said, “The local market for Hollywood films is growing at a very fast rate & there is an unprecedented hype surrounding Avatar across India. We therefore decided to release the 3D version in Tamil too as it is an important market.”

Fox Star Studios India is releasing the film in around 700 prints in English, Hindi, Tamil & Telugu, which is by far one of the biggest releases for a Hollywood film in India.

In Tamil Nadu itself, the studio will be releasing the film in more than 100 prints (English & Tamil together) beating the record of 2012 which was released in less than 100 prints in the same market.

Sathyam Cinema director Swaroop Reddy who is also the distributor for Avatar in Tamil Nadu says, “Avatar is undoubtedly the most awaited movie of the decade and we at Sathyam Cinemas are all revved up about it; especially since we’re releasing it in digital 3D too. The audiences here are eager to watch James Cameron’s latest spectacle after Titanic and we’re expecting nothing short of a phenomenal response at the cinemas.”

The film is due to release on 18 December, 2009.
