Gunga Jumna to be remade in Bhojpuri

MUMBAI: Film financier S K Jaiswal has turned producer with a Bhojpuri film to be directed by Ravi Sinha.

Jaiswal will be remaking the Dilip Kumar, Vyjayantimala, Nasir Khan and Anwar Hussain 1961 hit Gunga Jumna in Bhojpuri. The film, which sported a flavour of Bhojpuri dialogue along with Hindi, was directed by Nitin Bose. The film had won three Filmfare awards, including that for the best actor, cinematographer and dialogue writer. Naushad has provided the music for the original film.

Jaiswal says, “Ravi Sinha has directed Bhojpuri hits like Bhaiya Hamaar, Suhaag, Devarjee and Sasurai Zindabad . I liked the idea of remaking the original into a full-fledged Bhojpuri film. We are currently filming all the songs and are looking to release the film during Dassera this year.”

Says Sinha, “There are minor changes in the film and it has shades of confrontation, between the two brothers, as shown in Deewar . The film is titled  Laut Aawa Ganga . The cast comprises Manoj Tiwari ‘Mridul’, in Dilip Kumar’s role as a dacoit. Vyjayantimala’s role is being played by Shweta Tiwari. Vinay Anand plays a police officer and Raza Murad plays the bad man – a corrupt MLA; while Avdesh Tiwari plays his son. Sambhavana Seth too features in the film, in two item numbers.”

The original version itself was inspired by 1934 Hollywood hit Manhattam Melodrama and Angels with Dirty Faces, released in 1938.
