India: Welcome overtakes Taare collections

(UPDATED: Wednesday, 26 December, 9.00 pm)

MUMBAI: The weekend collections in India of last week’s releases Welcome and Taare Zameen Par have been announced by the respective companies. Studio 18 distributed Welcome grossed Rs 390 million (Rs 39 crores) in the first five days, whereas Aamir Khan’s Taare Zameen Par has grossed Rs 110 million (Rs 11 crores) in the first three days.

Welcome released with 900 prints (including 400 digital) in India and Taare Zameen Par released with 385 prints (including 95 digital).

Taare Zameen Par’s word of mouth publicity has been encouraging; Tuesday’s collections are as good as that of Sunday’s in some places. We hope to touch Rs 200 million (Rs 20 crores) gross for the first week’s collections,” says PVR general manager marketing and sales Ranjan Singh.

When quizzed about PVR Cinemas’ share in this collection, Singh said it is Rs 24.30 million (Rs 2.43 crores) in the first weekend.

Since Welcome had to give a miss on its Friday release at all multiplex chains in India (except PVR), Studio 18 is said to have suffered a loss of approximately Rs 30 million (Rs 3 crores) gross. However, the film has been fairing well across Indian and in the overseas.
