Rohit Roy forays into film production

MUMBAI: After playing a successful inning on the television front, actor Rohit Roy now wants to focus on his film career. Roy has also ventured into film production with a movie called Pankh, which is being directed by Sudipto Chattopadhyay.

Pankh is a co-production between Roy’s home production Magic Works and Sanjay Gupta’s White Feather Films. Roy, who will also be acting in Pankh, has recently been seen in films like Delhii Heights and Shootout at Lokhandwala. The film will have Bipasha Basu as the female lead. The other cast includes Lillete Dubey and Mahesh Manjrekar.

Speaking exclusively to, he says, “I have been contemplating production for a while now. Though I have started making content for television, Pankh would mark my foray as producer in films.”

The film is based on a real life case of child actor Ashish Channa who was in reality a girl but played boy roles in movies and television serials. In order to get Ashish roles in films, her mother would often pass her off as a boy. This gender confusion got to such a point that Ashish’s father had to intervene. In Pankh, however, child actor Maraddona, a newcomer, plays a boy who is so besotted with an actress that he wants to be like her.

Roy will also be seen in Sanjay Gupta’s two upcoming films namely Dus Kahaniyan and Alibagh. Speaking about his commitments, he adds, “Dus Kahaniyan is a series of 10 short stories. An experimental film, I would call it a new form of story-telling. There are 10 completely non-related short films catering to different genres including comedy, horror, romance and adultery, to name a few. It has a wider spectrum though each film enscapulates just 10-12 minutes. My track is with Anita and Nana Patekar. It is based on one of the popular stories from Gubbare.”

Other prominent actors in the film include Sanjay Dutt, Arjun Rampal, Manoj Bajpai and Dia Mirza.

Additionally, Roy is also directing one short film Rice Plate, which is about a Muslim girl and Hindu guy as part of Dus Aur Kahaniyan, which will be the second part of Dus Kahaniyan. However, he won’t be acting in the same.
