Sony acquires satellite rights of Dharma Productions’ We Are Family

MUMBAI: After acquiring the exclusive satellite rights of Rajkumar Hirani’s 3 Idiots for Rs 340 million (Rs 34 crore), Sony Entertainment Television has now picked up the satellite rights of Dharma Productions’ yet to release film We Are Family.

The channel has acquired the exclusive world satellite rights of the film for a period of seven years from UTV Motion Pictures, which holds the distribution rights of the film. UTV will be releasing the movie theatrically on 10 September, 2010.

Confirming the development to Businessofcinema.com, Max executive vice president and business head Sneha Rajani said, “Yes we have acquired exclusive world satellite rights of We Are Family for a period of seven years. We do not buy films that don’t give us exclusive world rights.”

When queried on the acquisition price of the movie, Rajani declined to comment.

We Are Family is an official remake of Sony Pictures’ Hollywood flick Stepmom. The remake is co-produced by Sony Pictures India along with Dharma. We Are Family stars Kajol, Kareena Kapoor and Arjun Rampal and is directed by debutant Siddharth Malhotra.
