Sony Pictures India gears up to release 15+ movies in 2009

Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE) Films India has rolled up its sleeves and is ready to release more than 15 movies in 2009.

The 2009 slate comprises Hindi as well as English movie releases in India. Touting 2009 as a year of movie magnificence, Sony Pictures will three movies in February. On 6 February, Underworld – The Rise of Lycans will release. The movie is directed by Patrick Tatopoulos and stars Michael Sheen, Billnighy, Rhona Mitra, Steven Mackintosh and Kevin Grevioux.

Will Smith starrer Seven Pounds will release on 13 February and has been directed by Gabrielle Muccino. The movie also stars Rosario Dawson, Michael Ealy, Barry Peppern and Woody Harrelson.

Closing the month will be The Pink Panther 2, which will release on 27 February. The movie is directed by Harald Zwart and stars Steve Martin, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jean Reno, Alfred Molina, Emily Mortimer, Andy Garcia, Lily Tomlin and John Cleese.

The month of March will also see three releases beginning with the Vinay Pathak starrer Straight – A Tedhi Medhi Love Story, which is presented by IDreams Production. The movie, which is directed by Parvati Balgopalan, will be released by SPE Films India on 6 March. It also stars Gul Panag, Anuj Chodhry, Sid Makkar, Ketki Dave and Rasik Dave.

Steve Carr directed comedy Paul Bart: Mall Cop will release on 20 March. It stars Kevin James and Jayma Mays. On the other hand, The International starring Clive Owen and Naomi Watts will release on 27 March. This thriller has been directed by Tom Tykwer.

Anne Hathway stars in the drama Rachel Getting Married, which will release on 3 April. It has been produced and directed by Jonathan Demme.

The Da Vinci Code team returns this year with Angels & Demons, which has been directed by Ron Howard and stars Tom Hanks. The movie is based on the best selling novel by Dan Brown. The movie will hit Indian theatres on 15 May.

Yet another Terminator franchise – Terminator Salvation – will hit screens this year on 29 May. The movie is directed by McG and stars Christian Bale, Anton Yelchin and Sam Worthington amongst others.

5 June will see the release of comedy film The Ugly Truth starring Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler. It has been directed by Robert Luketic. SPE Films India will also be releasing the Hindi film Teree Sang on 5 June. It has been produced by Bharat Shah and Karol Bagh Films (Anupam Kher & Satish Kaushik). Teree Sang stars Satish Kaushik, Sushmita Mukharjee, Rajat Kapoor and Neena Gupta.

Touted as SPE Films India’s biggest release of 2009 is a movie called 2012, which will release on 13 November. Directed by Roland Emmerich, the movie stars John Cusack, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Amanda Peet, Oliver Platt, Thande Newton along with Danny Glover and Woody Harrelson. 2012 is believed by some to be the year of the apocalypse as 21 December, 2012 marks the end of the Mayan calendar. Emmerich takes the Mayan doomsday predictions and brings them to life in this movie.

On 14 August, The Taking of Pelham 123, which has been directed by Tony Scott, will release. It stars Denzel Washington and John Travolta.

Also lined up this year is Julie & Julia, which stars Meryl Streep and Amy Adams. It has been directed by Nora Ephron. A release date for the same has not yet been decided. Another movie called Year One starring Jack Black, Michael Cera and Oliver Platt and directed by Harold Ramis is slated to release this year.

SPE Films will also release the animation film Cloudy With A Chance of Meat Balls. It has been directed by Chris Miller and Phil Lord. It has voice-overs by Bill Hader, Anna Faris, James Cann and Tracy Morgan amongst others.
