Supreme Court lifts ban on Aarakshan in Uttar Pradesh

MUMBAI: The Supreme Court today set aside Uttar Pradesh government’s decision to suspend the screening of Prakash Jha’s Aarakshan.

The Supreme Court in it’s order said that the UP government had no powers to suspend the screening of the movie on the ground that it may cause breach of peace.

It may be recalled that the three state governments namely UP, Andhra Pradesh and Punjab banned the screening of Aarakshan when it released last week due to fears that it may cause law and order problems.

An apex court bench of Justice M Sharma and Justice Anil R Dave said the state government cannot seek deletion of certain potions of the film as this amounted to censorship.

The SC also said that since the Central Board of Film Certification had cleared the film for public screening, state governments cannot raise objections on its content.

Aarakshan stars Amitabh Bachchan, Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone, Pratiek Babbar and Manoj Bajpai and deals with caste-based reservations in the Indian education system.
