MUMBAI: Save all your money! The next three months are going to be a treat for movie buffs. From 14 November, 2008 till 13 February, 2009 there are movies galore waiting to make their way to the silver screen. And not just any movies… these are movies starring top bracket actors and these are movies one actually waits for.
Beginning next week, the saga of releases looks somewhat like this – Dostana, Yuvvraaj, Rab Ne Banda Di Jodi, Ghajini, Chandni Chowk To China, Billu Barber and Dilli 6. One is hopeful that these movies wave the magic wand over the industry, which has seen a rather lackluster year in terms of content at least.
Actors like Abhishek Bachchan, Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan and Akshay Kumar have a movie release every second week thus making it a neck to neck competition. This is something that hasn’t yet been witnessed in the industry. To add to this, Bachchan junior and SRK have two releases each in a span of three months.
While all the actors mentioned above have a niche audience and set of fans, their back to back releases will give all and sundry in the industry an idea of their pull in the time of competition. However, apart from star power and performances, what also matters is the content. Bollywood has been witness to the fact that audiences these days are not very forgiving for mediocre content dished out to them. That apart, comparisons between the stars, directors, films and their respective box office collections is inevitable.
And if that was not enough, between these Goliaths are some Davids too. Small budget movies like Dasvidanya, Khallballi, Sorry Bhai, Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye, Dil Kabaddi, Jumbo, Paathshala, Raaz: The Mystery Continues and Shortkut, which also sound promising are slated to release in this time period.
If a handful of these upcoming movies – big or small – manage to make a mark at the box office, all’s not lost as yet.
Some points of interest in the upcoming movies:
Dostana: Seems like a cool flick from Karan Johar’s stable with the rocking chemistry between Abhishek and John.
Yuvvraaj: This Subhash Ghai directed film will see Salman Khan – Katirna Kaif play love duo on screen for the first time.
Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi: The industry is waiting with bated breath to see Aditya Chopra and Shah Rukh Khan’s combo yet again after Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge and Mohabbatein.
Ghajini: An Aamir Khan flick is always awaited…
Chandni Chowk To China: Akshay Kumar’s next after Singh Is Kinng where Deepika Padukone is paired opposite him for the first time.
Billu Barber: Priyadarshan and Shah Rukh Khan teaming up for the first time!
Dilli 6: After Rang De Basanti, this will be maverick filmmaker Rakyesh Om Prakash Mehra first release starring Abhishek Bachchan and Sonam Kapoor.
