Veteran actress Rekha has always been very secretive when it comes to her personal life. From various rumors to affair speculations, the elegant beauty of the tinsel town has been bombarded with all kinds of headlines and news. Recently a biography on the actress has been penned down by author Yasser Usman.
Titled Rekha: The Untold Story, the biography reveals shocking details about the starlet’s life. From her first step in the tinsel town to the various labels attached to her name, the book says it all.
Here are Eleven shocking revelations made by the biography.
During the shooting of Anjana Safar, the director hatched a plan with film’s male lead Biswajeet to catch a 15-year-old Rekha off guard for a kissing scene. The actress was shocked when Biswajeet caught hold of her and kissed her forcefully for a long time. With the entire crew members watching and hooting at the actress’ harassment, the incident earned Rekha the tag of ‘se*-kitten.”
While Rekha has never spoken about her alleged relationship with Amitabh Bachchan, the book unveils a lot of details about their much-publicized affair. Rekha reveals how Jaya Bachchan had barred Big B from working with Rekha after Silsila and accused Rekha of shaming the respected family. After reports of affairs with actors Jeetendra, Dharmendra and Sunil Dutt, she was labeled as a “man eater”, a “black widow” and a “marriage breaker”. It is no secret that Rekha wears sindoor since the time the rumors of her affair to Big B were leaked in the media.
Rekha’s se*ual openness, too, was revolutionary, even by modern standards, and won her yet more ire. It is impossible to imagine a young starlet today saying some of the things Rekha said four decades ago: “You can’t come close, really close, to a man without making love”, “It is sheer fluke that I have never got pregnant so far” and “Premarital se* is very natural. And all those prudes who say that a single woman should have se* only on her suhaag raat are talking bull”!
The most devastating blow, the proverbial last straw, was the reaction to the suicide, in 1990, of Mukesh Agarwal, Rekha’s estranged husband of a few months who had been clinically depressed for years. In spite of Rekha having worked in Bollywood for two decades by that time, Shashi Kapoor was the only industry insider who condoled with her. The rest were either coldly silent or nastily and baselessly blamed Rekha for the suicide.
Filmmaker Subhash Ghai once commented on Rekha saying, “Rekha has put such a blot on the face of the film industry that it’ll be difficult to wash it away easily. I think after this any respectable family will think twice before accepting any actress as their bahoo.”
Anupam Kher once commented on Rekha saying, “She’s become the national vamp. Professionally and personally, I think it’s curtains for her. I mean I don’t know how will I react to her if I come face to face with her.”
The book further also reveals how Rekha’s formal interaction with Amitabh Bachchan at Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh’s wedding in the year 1980 left Jaya in tears! The book states that Rekha graced the wedding wearing sindoor which stole all the media attention.
The book also reveals Rekha’s wedding with Vinod Mehra and she was not accepted by Vinod’s mother. Vinod’s mother Kamla Mehra humiliated Rekha when she entered the house as a newlywed bride.
Talking about her controversial sindoor, Rekha once expressed in an interview that “in the city I come from, it’s fashionable to wear sindoor.”
Shashi Kapoor once labeled Rekha as a dark and plump actress expressing, “How is this dark, plump and gauche actress ever going to make it?”
The biography reveals the fact that Rekha was the love child of Gemini Ganesan and had to deal with a disturbed childhood too.
