Gouranga Chakraborty, better known as Mithun Chakraborty or Mithun Da turns sixty two today, June 16, 2014.
In his younger days Mithun Chakraborty was a wrestler and has won the West Bengal State Wrestling Championship in the Junior Category and in Martial Arts he has graded a black belt.
Mithun Chakraborty made his acting debut with Mrigayaa in the year 1976, for which he won his first National Film Award for Best Actor.
Year 1982, is a landmark year for both Mithun Chakraborty and Bollywood because it was in that year that the film Disco Dancer released. The film gave Bollywood it’s Jimmy and Mithun Chakraborty his place under the sun.
If the disco culture got wider acceptance in the 80’s, much of the credit goes to the disco dancer Mithun Chakraborty himself, who made disco the most happening thing then. The way he shimmied on the dance floor and showed off his signature dance moves made the girls go gaga over him.
A comic book named Jimmy Zhingchak – Agent of D.I.S.C.O, which is based on Mithun Chakraborty. He has also written the foreword of the book.
In the 1970s, Mithun Chakraborty was briefly married to model Helena Luke. After their divorce, Helena moved to the US and is now a stewardess with an American airline. Mithun Chakraborty then married to Yogeeta Bali and they have four children – Mimoh, Rimoh, Namashi and Dishani.
During the 1980s, Mithun Chakraborty had an affair with Sridevi. Sridevi and Mithun Da got married secretly and when his wife Yogeeta Bali got to know of it, she tried committing suicide. Post this incident Mithun Chakraborty divorced Sridevi and returned back to Yogeeta Bali.
Mithun Chakraborty owns the Monarch Group, which has interests in the hospitality sector and educational sector and also owns a production house Paparatzy Productions.
Mithun Chakraborty made a huge splash on television as well. After the success of the Bengali competitive dance reality show Dance Bangla Dance, Mithun Chakraborty developed the concept of Dance India Dance and as they say rest is history.
Mithun Da hosts a reality show titled Dadagiri Unlimited on Zee Bangla and the Bengali version of Bigg Boss.
Some of Mithun Chakraborty‘s recent films include Veer, Golmaal 3, Housefull 2, Khiladi 786, Guru, Boss and the very recent Kaanchi.
Currently he is busy with films like It’s Entertainment with Akshay Kumar, Kick with Salman Khan and Hawaizaade with Ayushmann Khurrana.
