BOX OFFICE: Chennai Express – Biggest Hit 2013

Not just in India, but the SRK-Deepika Padukone starrer ‘Chennai Express’ is creating waves all over the world, going by the opening weekend box office collections.

MUMBAI: Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone starrer ‘Chennai Express’, directed by Rohit Shetty and co-produced by UTV Motion Pictures and Red Chillies Entertainment, sure seems to be riding the festive wave, as the collections are still going super strong.

Having released on a National holiday like Eid, and having the added boost of another holiday on 15 August, seems to have bolstered the fortunes of ‘Chennai Express’. For Raksha Bandhan, the makers had offered one ticket free on the purchase of two tickets – a strategy which seems to have paid off.

Monday’s collections were in the range of Rs 37.5 million (Rs 3.75 crore) net, while Tuesday, the figures shot up to nearly double: at Rs 70.6 million (Rs 7.06 crore) net.

The 12 day total (including paid previews)- Rs 190.46 crore.

As reported, ‘Chennai Express’ opened with a bang, with first weekend figures as follows: Rs 330 million (Rs 33 crore) net on its very first day (Friday, 9 August). Day 2 and Day 3 saw collections soar to about Rs 280 million (Rs 28 crore) net and Rs 325 million (Rs 32.5 crore) net respectively. Including paid previews, the film had already crossed the Rs 1 billion (Rs 100 crore) mark by the opening weekend.
