Box Office: Dum Maaro Dum fails to pack a punch

MUMBAI: After the disastrous performance of his last movie – Game, the latest Abhishek Bachchan starrer – Dum Maaro Dum – has also failed to pack a punch at the box office!

As per initial reports with Businessofcinema.com, the response to Dum Maaro Dum has been ho-hum on its opening day. While the movie was not exactly panned by the critics, it hasn’t received rave reviews either. At multiplexes, the movie saw average occupancy of 30-35 per cent on Friday, whereas the response at single screens was even below that.

Dum Maaro Dum has been in the news for a number of wrong reasons considering the controversies it attracted prior to release. Nonetheless, this added immensely to the promotion buzz around the movie. Also, given the fact that the movie deals with the drugs mafia and is based in Goa, could well draw crowds at theaters over the weekend.

Dum Maaro Dum is directed by Rohan Sippy and also stars Rana Daggubati, Bipasha Basu and Pratiek Babbar in the lead along with Bachchan.

The slow opening of the movie is yet another nail in the coffin for Bachchan’s career. The actor’s last five flicks, which had him as a solo lead, have tanked at the box office. These are Drona (2008), Delhi 6 (2009), Raavan (2010), Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey (2010) and Game (2011). His other two movies – Dostana (2008) and Paa (2009) – saw him sharing screen space with John Abraham and Amitabh Bachchan respectively and hence the credit of their box office outcome cannot be attributed to Abhishek.

Going by this, a lot depends on Dum Maaro Dum’s performance at the box office over the weekend as far at least as far as Junior Bachchan is concerned!
