Box Office: Rio grosses Rs 100 million in India

MUMBAI: Fox Star Studios’ latest 3D extravaganza Rio has grossed Rs 100 million (Rs 10 crore) across India in its three weeks run.

As per Fox Star Studios, this makes Rio the biggest Hollywood animated film out of India, outperforming the previous highest Ice Age 3 (Rs 92 million), which incidentally was also directed by Carlos Saldana, and presented by Fox Star.

Featuring the voices of Jesse Eisenberg, Anne Hathaway, Will.I.Am, Jamie Foxx in the English version and Sunidhi Chauhan, Shaan, Ranvir Shorey & Vinay Pathak in the Hindi version, the film has also become the second biggest animated film in India of all time after Hanuman (Rs 110 million).

Fox Star Studios CEO Vijay Singh said, “We are thrilled to see Rio holding steady ground even through its third week of release & despite competition from Indian films! The film has found a connect with audiences across all age groups and is doing exceedingly well, especially in the 3D version.”

Internationally too, Rio has maintained its top position for the second week in a row, propelling its total worldwide collection to $283.8 million, making it the No.1 film of 2011.
