MUMBAI: Viacom18 Motion Pictures and Ashi Dua’s ‘Bombay Talkies’, an anthology of short films directed by Karan Johar, Zoya Akhtar, Dibakar Banerjee, Anurag Kashyap; and starring Rani Mukherjee, Viacom18 Motion Pictures, Ashi Dua, Randeep Hooda, Katrina Kaif, Ranvir Shorey, Naman Jain has had a poor first weekend at the box office.

The omnibus film, ‘Bombay Talkies’ is a special tribute aimed at celebrating the centenary of Indian cinema, where four of the finest directors of Bollywood have come together to create one full length feature film

As reported, ‘Bombay Talkies’ garnered favourable reviews when it opened on 3 May, Friday; but the positivity didn’t somehow translate into numbers. The film managed a soft opening of Rs 13.4 million (Rs 1.34 crore net) on Day 1.

Since then, the film has raked in Rs 15.5 million (1.55 crore) net and Rs 17.3 million (1.73 crore) net on Day 2, Saturday and Day 3, Sunday respectively. The three day total for ‘Bombay Talkies’ is in the range of Rs 46.2 million (4.62 crore) net.

What hindered the film’s business was the other big film which released on the same weekend, ‘Shootout at Wadala’, starring John Abraham, Manoj Bajpayee, Anil Kapoor, Kangana Ranaut and others. The action-oriented film proved to be a mass-entertainer, replete with item songs and testosterone-heavy content, and ended up faring better than ‘Bombay Talkies’.
