Indian Owned Company Wins Oscar For Interstellar

interstellarTo say that this victory was underrated is an understatement. Indian-owned company Prime Focus formed by Namit Malhotra bagged the award for Best Visual Effects for the worldwide hit film Interstellar at this year’s Oscar. Directed by Christopher Nolan, Interstellar won only one award at this year’s 87th Academy Awards.

Not expecting to win this time Namit Malhotra skipped the Oscars. Namit is the owner of Double Negative, the London-based VFX studio that merged with a subsidiary of Prime Focus in 2014. Double Negative has been involved in Inception, Gravity, and The Amazing Spiderman 2. “Last year Gravity had won. So I never thought Interstellar would, honestly. One time can be lucky, but twice shows a pattern of work and talent,” said Malhotra from London.

Namit Malhotra tweeted, “That’s our first Oscar for the Prime Focus group to see the achievement of double negative to get this well deserved recognition.” Malhotra started off opening an editing studio in 1995 when he was still a teenager, after which he entered into equipment renting for film production and eventually established one of the world’s largest 3D, animation and visual effects company.

Having previously worked in Bollywood films like Go Goa Gone, Agent Vinod and Rockstar Namit Malhotra is of an opinion that fame mostly comes from the West. Malhotra’s aim of forming Prime Focus back then was to bridge the technological gap between Bollywood and Hollywood. In an interview in 2013 Malhotra stated, “We should be the Indian Pixar or the Indian version of Pixar or Marvel which we can absolutely create. We have the opportunity, we are the company that can do that.”

In its tremendously impressive history, Prime Focus has been nominated a total five times for the studio’s work in Tree of LifeX-Men: First ClassHarry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2Transformers: Dark of the Moon and Hugo.
