Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa grosses $72.3 million at box office

Mumbai: Dremworks’ animation movie Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa has grossed $72.3 million at box office. Over the last weekend Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa has grossed an estimated $13.2 million from 2,364 locations across 24 territories.  

The film took a myriad of opening records across its launch territories, including setting an industry record as highest grossing animated opening of all time in the following territories:

Portugal ($1.1 million from 75 locations)

United Arab Emirates ($620,000 from 25 locations)

Romania ($143,000 from 13 locations)

Bulgaria ($68,000 from eight locations)

Egypt ($46,000 from eight locations)

Spain enjoyed a fantastic opening of $5.8 million from 603 locations placing them firmly in first place over the weekend. In Lithuania ($215,000 from 10 locations) the film enjoyed the second biggest opening of all time and United International Pictures’ (UIP) biggest opening of all time. In Turkey ($563,000 from 122 locations) it was the third biggest animation opening of all time and the biggest Paramount opening of 2008. In Colombia it opened at number one earning $737,000 from 141 locations.

These results come hot on the heels of a wild and successful publicity tour, which saw Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, Jada Pinkett Smith and director Tom McGrath travl across eight countries in four different continents in twelve days – taking news of the sequel to people all around the world.
