Moviecube kiosks launched in Canada

MUMBAI: The New Release, the DVD rental kiosk company, with its moviecube brand, announced an enterprise-wide agreement with Loblaw Companies Limited, to place its DVD rental kiosks throughout the grocery stores’ Canadian locations. The New Release (TNR) expects to install kiosks in over 350 Loblaw supermarkets by July 2008. This comes after the successful nine-month test of kiosks at Loblaw supermarkets throughout Canada.

“moviecube has the dominant position in the grocery channel in the US, so expanding into Canada, where movie rental customers have shown a voracious appetite for DVD rentals, is a much-anticipated move for us,” said The New Release president and CEO Tim Belton. “We look forward to bringing top box office movies to our Canadian friends through our valued partner, Loblaw.”

Loblaw is Canada‘s largest food distributor and a leading provider of general merchandise products, drugstore and financial products and services. Through its various operating banners, Loblaw is committed to providing Canadians with a one-stop destination to meet their food and household needs.

The New Release, which operates its kiosks under the name moviecube, recently received an $11 million infusion from Washington, D.C.-based MCG Capital Corp., which will be used to expand its footprint in the grocery market in the US and Canada. TNR currently operates over 2,100 kiosks throughout the United States and expects to add at least 650 more in 2008.
