Sylvester Stallone’s The Expendables takes top spot at box office

MUMBAI: Sylvester Stallone directed The Expendables has taken the top spot at the box office in North America.

Released by Lionsgate, The Expendables earned revenues to the tune of $35 million at the North American box office over the past weekend. It stars Stallone along with Sly Stallone, Jet Li and Jaso amongst others.

Julia Robert’s Eat, Pray, Love, which was also released on the same day by Sony Pictures, was at second spot with $23.7 million in box office receipts.

Sony Pictures’ The Other Guys, which collected $18 million over the weekend was down to the third spot this week from its #1 position last week. The movie has so far grossed $70.5 million. 

Warner Bro’s Inception, which was at the top spot for three consecutive weeks was down at number four this week at the box office with collections of $11.37 million. The multi-starrer Inception has earned $248.55 million at the North American box office so far.

Universal’s new release – Scott Pilgrim vs. The World opened at the fifth spot with collections of $10.52 million, whereas the studio’s earlier release Despicable Me was at the sixt spot with $6.76 million. The latter has seen total collections of $222 million at the North American box office till date.

Disney’s Step Up 3-D was at the seventh spot (weekend: $6.62 million, total: $29.56 million), followed by Sony’s Angelina Jolie starrer Salt (weekend: $6.35 million, total: $103.57 million), Paramount’s Dinner For Schmucks (weekend: $6.32 million, total: $58.81 million) and Warner Bros’ Cats & Dogs: Revenge Of Kitty Galore (weekend: $4.07 million, total: $35.10 million) at the eighth, ninth and tenth place respectively.
