Marathi music climbs online popularity charts in Maharashtra

Mumbai: A study conducted by People Group’s social networking site Fropper.com has revealed that even in cosmopolitan cities like Mumbai and Pune, Marathi music rules the roost.

User trends on the site show that despite the expected craze for Bollywood music, a large number of Punekars and Mumbaikars are still closely connected to their regional language roots through music.

The Fropper.com study states that 41 per cent of Fropper music listeners tuned in to Lata Mangeshkar making her the most listened to Marathi film singer while 38 per cent listened to Kishore Kumar. The Marathi non-film song category is no different with 29 per cent of the listeners tuning into Shreya Ghosal, closely followed by Vaishali Samant who was heard by 24 per cent of the listeners.

Other popular categories include Marathi Film Albums where Aga Bai Aarecha leads with 51 per cent  listenership while Karbhari Hou Dya Daman tops the Non-Marathi Film Album charts with 34 per cent listenership. Ajit Kadkade still tops the Marathi Devotional Artist category with 14 per cent listenership while Gaar Dongrachi Hava tops the Marathi Devotional Album category with 22 per cent listenership.

Fropper.com business head Navin Mittal says, "Though the popularity of Marathi music comes as no surprise, what is indeed a revelation is that it has made its presence felt in the online medium as well. Our launch of regional music channels has been a resounding success. And in a short span of time we have aggregated a huge licensed music database. Gauging by the response to Marathi music, we will continue to add more songs to our collection."
