Rabindra Sangeet legend Suchitra Mitra passes away

MUMBAI: Rabindra Sangeet legend Suchitra Mitra  died on Monday and she was cremated at  the Keoratola crematorium  on Tuesday.

Mitra was 86years old. She was a professor and head of the music department for many years at the  Rabindra Bharati University.

Students along with a number of eminent Rabindra Sangeet singers, including Mitra’s contemporary Dwijen Mukhopadhyay, paid tributes. West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhhadeb Bhattacharjee, Bengali actress Rituparna Sengupta, union minister Mukul Roy, city mayor Sovan Chatterjee, Left Front chairman Biman Bose, and several state ministers were  also among those who paid their last respects to Mitra.

Born in 1924, Mitra was known for her rendition of Tagore songs.
