Tribute To The Rib-Tickling Genius of Andaz Apna Apna

Salman Amira Main coverAndaz Apna Apna was a film which was, in many ways, ahead of its time. Having released on April 11, 1994, it has been exactly 20 years since the cult classic, rib-tickling joyride of a film hit the marquees. This Rajkumar Santoshi directorial came to define the 1990’s, and became a genre-leader of sorts.

Starring a young Aamir Khan and Salman Khan, this film can be attributed to their meteoric success. Since then, the two handsome actors have gone on to individually shatter the Box Office with their assorted films, and have managed to stay on top of their game, a good two decades later.

Andaz Apna Apna was famous for its well-etched characters, the superlative comic timing of the actors, and of course, the memorable music. One liners made this film much-cited and quoted, even today. Characters like Crime Master Gogo, Robert, Amar, Prem, Karisma Kapoor and Raveena Tandon have literally gone down in the annals of Bollywood history.

The film abounds with quotable quotes, hilarious situations, puns and innuendos that make today’s cine-buff howl with delight. The plot revolved around the mistaken identity of an heiress, who is wooed by two suitors hoping to make a quick buck. Along the way, they get involved in a kidnapping, extortion, and a side-track involving two twin brothers separated at birth.

The gags were extraordinarily written and are still funny today, even after many viewings. Andaz Apna Apna is also special because it brought together two out of the three leading Khans, a feat that has not been replicated many times since then. Moreover, the genuine camaraderie and happy vibe around the film make it one of the best comedies in Indian cinematic history.

There has been speculation for some time, about a possible sequel to Andaz Apna Apna, and we sure hope the vision of the original bears fruition if and when the sequel is made. Retaining the original cast would be ideal for Andaz Apna Apna fans, but if that weren’t possible, suitable replacements should be arranged.

The script of the sequel should be so funny, that it should live up and possible even surpass to the charm of the original film.

Mr. Rajkumar Santoshi, are you listening?
