Mary Kom has fought many battles in her life but it seems her biopic has already lost one. The film has been barred from release in Manipur…her home state. It is pretty sad that a heroic saga will not be screened in a state that gave us Mary Kom. The chaotic political situation in the state is the reason behind it.
The seperatists in Manipur are demanding a sovereign state and have banned Hindi films in the state. They have even banned the use of Hindi in the state. So not only films, even Television shows don’t reach the hilly state.
There are also other reasons why people in Manipur are not really looking forward to the film.
- Priyanka Chopra hardly resembles Mary Kom. She is less mascular and more curvaceous than Mary Kom. That completely belies the whole spirit of the film.
- People from the state would have preferred a local talent playing Mary Kom in the film. But then it wouldn’t have been commercially viable for the producers.
- The prosthetic work on Priyanka Chopra looks half done and is not worthy of discussion. That has also apparently hurt the sentiments of the people from the state.
Well, only time will tell if Mary Kom manages to get a release in her state. We hope it does.
