MUMBAI: Producer Ravi Chopra plans to release only 80 to 100 prints of Deepa Mehta’s Water across India, with the multiplex audience as the film’s primary target.
In Uttar Pradesh, where the film encountered trouble during its making seven years ago, only four to five prints will be released in multiplexes in Lucknow and Kanpur, according to BR Films’ business manager Sanjay Bhutiani. The film is being distributed by Magnum Distributors in UP.
Water stars Seema Biswas, Lisa Ray and John Abraham in the lead roles. The film is about the plight of Indian widows in pre independent India.
It was in Benaras, Uttar Pradesh that fundamentalist groups had stalled the shooting of Water in 2000. But this does not seem to have stopped the makers from releasing the film in UP.
