MUMBAI: The success of Sivaji: The Boss has had an unusual fallout. Distributors are now looking forward to re-release Hindi films that starred the southern star in the 1980s.
Trade sources say plans are afoot to revive the Rajinikant – Shatrughan Sinha starrer Takkar Pe Takkar, which has been lying in the cans for more than 18 years. The film was produced by Raja Roy (producer Reena Roy’s brother) and directed by Harmesh Malhotra.
“The dispute between the producer and the distributors has put a spanner in the release of the film. The producer is not in Mumbai; while Harmesh Malhotra is no more. We are trying out ways to find solutions and bring it to the screen,” say sources.
Other films that starred Rajini, like Geraftaar, Andhaa Kanoon, Gangwa and Hum might also see the light of day again, trade sources say.
Bombay Circuit distributor Dilip Dhanwani believes that while new films are not doing well, re-releasing an old hit gives a chance to make a few quick bucks.
Another distributor, Popatbhai, who oversees Pravesh Sippy’s concern and controls the three-screen Fun Fiesta multiplex cinemas in Nalasopara, says, “It is quite natural that most distributors who are losing investments in many releases, are now looking forward to reap a rich harvest by releasing old hits of Rajini.”
