MUMBAI: It happens only in India! Friday morning saw the Emraan Hashmi and Kangana Ranaut starrer horror – thriller Raaz – The Mystery Continues (RTMC) take a bigger and better opening as compared to the Oscar nominated and celebrated movie Slumdog Millionaire.

According to information available with Businessofcinema.com, RTMC has taken an exceptionally good opening in B center towns like Nasik, Aurangabad, Indore, Ludhiana, Faridabad, Bharuch, Baroda, Surat and Panipat amongst others. In metro cities like Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata the morning shows opened at an average of 50 percent.

On the other hand, Danny Boyle directed Slumdog Millionaire’s opening is said to be in the range of 30 – 40 per cent, however, all multiplexes are positive that it should pick up by Friday evening without a drop until Monday night.

"Raaz’s morning shows were houseful in our multiplexes in Bangalore, Hyderabad, UP, Punjab and also at our Mulund property in Mumbai. In other properties in Mumbai at Juhu, Pheonix Mills and Goregaon Raaz had a 40 – 50 per cent opening. In Delhi, the opening is 60 per cent. Slumdog Millionaire should pick pace by Friday evening," says PVR programming head Prakhar Joshi.

Comparing Raaz’s opening to Emraan Hashmi and Vishesh Film’s previous movie Jannat, which released in May last year, the opening of Raaz is far better. In fact, the release is comparatively wider also. However, Jannat did very well in the subsequent weeks after its release due to a good word of mouth publicity working in its favour and the movie proved to be a money earner for one and all.

"In Gujarat Raaz was houseful in the morning show and in the North it had a 60 – 70 per cent opening in our properties. We are expecting Slumdog Millionaire to pick up by word of mouth," says Fun Cinemas AVP programming Bhumika Tewari.

Both Inox and Cinemax have registered an opening of 80 per cent for Raaz across their properties in India and Slumdog Millionaire’s opening is approximately 40 per cent.
