MUMBAI: Post the Oscars which saw Slumdog Millionaire winning eight statuettes, the movie’s run at the box office in India and internationally, has been going steady.
The movie, which has been made on a budget of $15 million, has until now grossed $213 million at the global box office. In India, Slumdog Millionaire’s gross collections stand at Rs 320 million (Rs 32 crores or $ 6.5 million).
In India, post the Oscar announcements, there has been an increased interest from exhibitors with regards to the movie. According to Fox Star Studios, the number of screens have almost doubled to 424 in week six as compared to 223 in week five. Moreover, the total number of shows have increased to 1199, which is close to the number of shows that the movie ran with in the first week of its release.
The movie released in the English and Hindi dubbed version across India. Company officials also inform that the number of shows for the Hindi version has gone up almost three times.
Close to 55 per cent of the box office collections have come in from the US ($116,891,176), collections from the United Kingdom and Ireland and Malta stand at $37,023,110, whereas the rest of the world brought in collections of $96,487,144.
Slumdog Millionaire is probably the first movie that has garnered increased interest worldwide post its multiple awards bagging spree.
