3 Idiots breaks all records at the box office; nets Rs 116 million in India

MUMBAI: In one of the most amazing box office runs for an Indian movie, Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s 3 Idiots, which is directed by Rajkumar Hirani, has crossed the Rs 1 billion (Rs 100 crore) mark in net box office collections worldwide by the end of last week. The movie has so far done a net business of approximately Rs 1.6 billion (Rs 116 crore) in 10 days including paid previews. In its second weekend, the movie did a net business of Rs 350 million (Rs 35 crore), which is unheard of.

From Thursday, 23 December to Friday, 1 January the movie has done unprecedented net business of Rs 903.20 million (Rs 90.32 crore) in India alone. On the second Friday (1 January), the movie did a net business of approximately Rs 115.40 million (Rs 11.54 crore) in India.

Additionally, in the overseas too the movie has done phenomenally well and has broken all previous records with the first week collections at approximately $7.30 million.

In the UK, the movie has now crossed £1million mark. By the end of the second week, 3 Idiots became the highest grossing UK release of 2009 beating Love Aaj Kal (£1,041,056).
