‘We have one Censor Board, we don’t need another one’ – Maharashtra CM Ashok Chavan

MUMBAI: FICCI FRAMES 2010 kicked off in Mumbai today. At the inaugural session, Maharashtra chief minister Ashok Chavan said the government will take all steps to ensure smooth release of movies in the state.

Citing the recent opposition of My Name Is Khan’s release in Mumbai and other parts of Maharasthra due to a statement made by Shah Rukh Khan regarding Pakistani cricketers’ presence in the IPL, Chavan said that there was already one Censor Board in India and "we don’t need another one."

"Our government will ensure that the films that are approved by the Censor Board get a smooth release in the State. We feel that we don’t need to react on every occasion but at the same time, we won’t succumb to any pressure. There is no reason for people to not go to theatres to watch films that are passed by the Censor. We will support all films that are approved by the Censor. This is an initiative that the government has taken," he said.

He also added that the State government will support initiatives and policy issues that will be presented by the FICCI committee. "Whatever policy suggestions are given will be taken up by the government and will be presented to the Government of India. They will be supported by relevant acts," he added.

Chavan also spoke about the growing menace of movie piracy, which causes huge losses to people who invest. "The need of the hour is to enforce the legislations that we have both at the center and the state level," he said.
