MUMBAI: Yesterday one of the most popular couple’s of Bollywood – Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor, got hitched with a simple registered marriage. This was followed by a late night grand red-carpet reception at the Taj hotel with attendance from Bollywood’s swish set. (SEE PHOTOS)
For what seems like forever, fans and media alike have waited with a bated breath to know when the pair would finally tie the knot. After all, ‘Saifeena’ as they are lovingly referred to, have been dating each other from more than 5 years now. Here’s a look at the progress of their love saga:
Actor Saif Ali Khan who was previously married to Amrita Singh, separated from the older actress in 2004. He holds an extremely close bond with their offspring Ibrahim and Sara. Meanwhile, a little something was brewing between Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor – and Bebo who is known to keep her life an open book announced this shortly. They dated for 3 years before calling it quits in 2007.
Saif who had a brief affair with Swiss model Rosa Catalano, first worked with Kareena in 2003 for J.P. Dutta’s ‘LOC Kargil’. Kareena’s role being short, the actors didn’t have much of an interaction.
It was finally during Aditya Chopra’s ‘Tashan’, that the two stars – clearly destined to be together – were drawn to each other. Kareena revealed how she went weak in the knees when she saw the shirtless chote nawab lounging under a glorious sun. “I was married to Saif in my mind the first time I saw him”, she said. Saif though, had noticed Kareena much, much before – when she was a teenager. He said, “This is something even she doesn’t know. She was young, sitting on a ledge outside a makeup room, staring ahead with her big green eyes. Someone told me ,’This is Karisma Kapoor’s little sister’. I thought she was simply stunning”.
Evidently, It was love at first sight. On the sets of ‘Tashan’ the duo were soon chatting away endlessly. From there on there was no looking back.
The couple dated each other for almost two months, when Saif asked her to move in. It was a huge decision, keeping in mind the conservative Indian social fabric. But decisive, Saif brought Kareena home, after convincing her mother Babita. For Kareena the greatest proof of the nawab’s love for her remains the tattoo that is on his hand spelling her name.
After working together in films like ‘Kurbaan’ and ‘Agent Vinod’, the couple announced their decision to get married in 2012. But they kept the media playing guessing games. Which month was it – October or December? Where was it – Mumbai, Pataudi, London or Maldives? Booking close to 5 hotels in the same city to keep the paparazzi at bay, juicy details only started pouring out recently when mother Sharmila Tagore distributed the wedding invitations.
Kickstarting the wedding week with a private sangeet at their residence ‘Fortune Heights’ (SEE PHOTOS), Bollywood’s ‘it’ couple Saif & Kareena – now officially Mr. and Mrs. Khan will soon take the party to Pataudi.
