The wait is over. After months and months of speculation, Sanjay Leela Bhansali has finally released the first look poster of his upcoming film ‘Ram Leela’, which is touted as a Gujarati version of Shakespeare’s classic ‘Romeo and Juliet’.
The first look poster is a tantalising teaser trailer of what’s to come, in terms of the film. For months, Ranveer Singh’s look for ‘Ram Leela’ was kept under wraps. Then, when the ‘Band Baaja Baraat’ boy could take it no longer, Sanjay gave him permission to step outside and be seen by the public. His bearded frame instantly drew gasps from the waiting media and audiences, for we all wondered: was THIS to be Bhansali’s version of the cult classic epic hero Romeo?
But now, all fears have been assuaged and laid to rest: for both Ranveer and Deepika look positively stunning in the first look poster.
The poster shows the couple standing atop a bed of guns and rifles, presumably to depict the opposition their love will have to face in the film. Ranveer is bare-torsoed (hello six-packs!) and is cradling the six-foot tall Bollywood beauty Deepika Padukone in his arms. Ranveer’s right arm has an amulet or a ‘taveez’ strung tightly around it, perhaps to focus more on his muscular girth. And the sexy star even has an earring in one ear, symbolic of the traditional piercings worn by Gujarati men.
Deepika, on her part is wearing a traditional yet exquisite Gujarati lehenga choli, in the vibrant colours of red and green. The lehenga she sports in the poster reportedly weighed a whopping 30 kgs and has a 50 meter ghera designed by Anju Modi, who went out of her way to bring the intricacies of Kutch to Deepika’s wardrobe in Ram Leela to meet Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s exacting standards. She looks ecstatic to be in the arms of her lover, but her face betrays the fear and angst she feels inside. Her visage reveals her looking intently into the distance, fearing for hers and her lover’s fate.
In the distance, we see the silhouette of a city, and the sands of a desert stand between the cruel city and the outlaw lovers. This could also be quite an apt metaphor for the sands of time, showing the period in which the film is set.
All in all, the poster has most certainly piqued our curiosity, and we just can’t wait to see what ace filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali has up his sleeve this time around. ‘Ram Leela’ is produced by Eros Entertainment, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and will release on 29th November 2013.
