MUMBAI: 3 Idiots has managed to do what no other movie has done till date. The movie has done a net business of approximately Rs 410 million (Rs 41 crore) at the Indian box office, which is the highest ever so far. Additionally, the movie has grossed a whopping $4.50 million in the overseas market in the opening weekend. The movie has truly emerged as the biggest blockbuster Indian cinema has seen till date.
The India gross collections stood at an astounding Rs 1 billion (Rs 100 crore) in four days. While the magic lasted all weekend, the movie managed to hold its own on Monday too with record occupancy levels across theatres in India and the overseas.
Until now, Ghajini held the record of the highest opening weekend (Friday – Sunday) net collections with approximately Rs 300 million (Rs 30 crore), which was followed by Love Aaj Kal (Rs 280 million), Singh Is Kinng (Rs 255 million), Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (Rs 247 million), Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani (Rs 235 million), Kambakkht Ishq (Rs 230 million), De Dana Dan (Rs 225 million), Race (Rs 220 million) and Om Shanti Om (Rs 217 million).
Aamir Khan’s magic, Rajkumar Hirani’s brilliant storytelling coupled with the strong backing of producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra has managed to work wonders for the film at the box office.
