MUMBAI: Aamir Khan Productions’ latest film, Peepli [Live], directed by Anusha Rizvi seems to be running into one controversy after another. After the recent protest by singers of Mehngai Dayain followed by another controversy that involved a plagiarism row over a song from the film, Chola Mati Ke Ram; the producers of Peepli [Live] have now got into trouble over protest by farmers in the Vidarbha region.
On 15 August, farmers staged a protest in the streets in Yavatmal, near Nagpur. The group of farmers protested against Khan’s Peepli [Live], which according to them was an attempt to belittle the cause of farmers in the region.
They burnt an effigy of Khan as a mark of protest as they objected to the way the farmers’ suicide has been portrayed in the film and demanded a ban on the film.
Speaking to Businessofcinema.com, a spokesperson from Aamir Khan Productions said, “Anusha or Aamir are not giving a statement because they have in no way tried to belittle the cause of the farmers in the region. It’s just their perspective.”
