All eyes on KANK

This week there was a stifled bustle at Naaz. Everyone talked in hushed tones about the providence of Karan Johar’s Amitabh – Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukherji, Preity Zinta and Abhishek Bachchan starrer Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna. Yash Raj Film Distributors are distributing this film with little below 900 prints, unlike their earlier film Fanaa. Bombay circuit which includes Maharashta, Gujarat, Saurashtra, parts of Karnataka will see 150 prints, 35 UFOs, 19 DLPs and 8 E-City digital prints. Trade pundits are predicting that the film will definitely take a flying start. Manoj Desai, the head honcho of G-7 and Maratha Mandir says, “We have registered 3-days houseful on Monday. Multiplexes are having a difficult time. I have hear that the tickets are priced up to Rs. 350.”

The legendary Metro Cinema at Marine Lines, Mumbai which was shut down a while ago will re-open as Metro Adlabs with KANK on August 11. On August 10 there will be a paid-premiere of the film. It is a pride addition for the Adlabs chain of cinemas.

On the other hand Milan cinema at Santacruz, Bombay has been taken over by Inox Leisure. Meanwhile, Inox, Nagpur will open on August 11 with KANK. Further to it, news is that Arun Sharma from Inox, Kolkata has been replaced by Babloo Damani, brother of distributor-producer Lala Damani.

Chaturvedi Bros. of ABC Films have won a berth at IMPDA (Indian Motion Picture Distributors Association) elections held once again at Naaz. Sanjay Ghai is topping as the No.1 in Delhi-U.P. sectors. He is now looking after the booking of films at Wave multiplexes in Ghaziabad, Noida and Lucknow. Previously Rajeev Gupta used to handle the bookings. Ghai also used to book for PVR chain of cinemas and Adlabs multiplexes.

The traders at Naaz were surprised about Rafta Rafta – The Speed celebrating 25 weeks. But they were joking among themselves to approach Kumar Mangat for the Hindi dubbing rights of Omkara. The reason is the blend of Haryanvi and Rajasthani language has spoiled its prospects. The enthusiastic traders feel that the Hindi dubbing could salvage the film.

Veteran distributor Devendra Shah who had burnt his fingers by distributing Husn – Love & Betrayal in Bombay is lying low. Meanwhile, is busy with producing a film with Southern director. The news is kept under wraps but if reports are to be believed, the shooting for the film is 70% complete.

Balaji Exhibitors are happy to be in the august company of Bhojpuri films. Zulmi Sang Aankh Ladi is running successfully in its 6 th week in Bombay. Last Friday, on August 4, they have released Raksha Bandhan and Ho Gail Ba Pyaar Odhniya Wali Se to a flying start.

Another leading distributor of Bombay, R.M. Ahuja & Co. too has joined the bandwagon of releasing regional films. This week (on Aug. 4) they released a Tamil film Aran (Released in Malayalam as Keerthichakra) starring Mohanlal at Aurora, King Circle with daily one show and other theatres too.

As can be seen below this was a average buying week with small budgeted films changing hands.
