BOX OFFICE: ‘Inkaar’ Proves To Be Damp Squib On Day 1

Starring Arjun Rampal, Chitrangada Singh, this tale of sexual harassment at the workplace has failed to make its mark at the ticketing windows.

MUMBAI: Sudhir Mishra’s latest film ‘Inkaar’ has failed to impress audiences, going by the day 1 box office collections. Starring Arjun Rampal, Chitrangada Singh, this tale of sexual harassment at the workplace has failed to make its mark at the ticketing windows.

This much-publicised film by Sudhir Mishra (of ‘Hazaaron Khwahishen Aisi’ and ‘Yeh Saali Zindagi’ fame) was touted as a revolutionary film dealing with the sensitive topic of sexual harassment in the corporate world.

‘Inkaar’ has barely managed to rake in an approximate Rs 16.3 million (1.63 crore) net on its opening day, despite thorough promotions and a steady buzz around the film. The major business was seen in multiplexes in Mumbai and Delhi, with a very poor performance in mass-oriented circuits in the interior regions.

In comparison, even last week’s release, ‘Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola’ fared better, with a substantially higher Rs 70 million (7 crore) net on Day 1. This itself is considered a lackluster performance for a big budget film with A-list stars.

With the weekend looming large, the only hope comes in form of word-of-mouth and the few and far between positive reviews for the film. The film has only a one week window, for next Friday another big budget multi-starrer film (Abbas-Mustan’s ‘Race 2’ starring Saif Ali Khan, John Abraham, Anil Kapoor, Deepika Padukone and others) will hit the theatres, and will most likely eat into the second week collections of ‘Inkaar’.
