HIT-AND-RUN CASE: Salman Khan Granted Reprieve In Form Of Fresh Trial

Salman-Khan-5121

Salman Khan‘s court troubles in connection with the infamous 2002 hit and run case, though far from over, have at least given him a breather.

As per latest reports, Khan has been granted his plea of beginning the trial afresh.

Today, December 5, 2013, a Mumbai court ordered a fresh trial in the Salman Khan hit-and-run case. In November 2013, Salman Khan had appealed to the court for the trial to begin anew, because of the more serious charge of “culpable homicide not amounting to murder”, which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in jail was levied against him, as against the previous charge of “rash and negligent driving” (carrying a punishment of upto two years of jail time).

As he is facing a more serious charge now, Khan requested for the earlier evidence in the case to be discarded, and that the trial should now begin anew.

The reason for requesting for a fresh trial, as per Salman Khan’s lawyer Srikant Shivade had argued that the actor had “not been given an opportunity to cross examine the witness and a more serious charge should be tried in a sessions court.”

The court said today that the witnesses and evidence in Khan’s case will be re-examined, with the trial date set for 23 December.

Case File:

In September 2002, Salman Khan allegedly rammed a luxury SUV over a group of sleeping pavement-dwellers in the dead of the night. One person was fatally injured, while four others suffered grievous injuries.
