Horror flick Phoonk beats Maan Gaye & Mumbai Meri Jaan

MUMBAI: Ram Gopal Varma directed horror flick Phoonk, Mallika Sherawat and Rahul Bose starrer romantic comedy Maan Gaye Mughall E Azam, Mumbai Meri Jaan and animation movie My Friend Ganesha 2 opened at theatres this week.

Out of all the movies released, it is Phoonk that has taken a wide leap in terms of opening and occupancy at theatres. Phoonk has taken a better opening than Maan Gaye Mughall E Azam and Mumbai Meri Jaan. While in some places, the movie is running to 80 – 90 per cent occupancy, it is also running houseful across many screens at various multiplexes.

Fun Cinemas AVP programming Bhumika Tewari says, "This week seems to be interesting as the audience can choose from three different genres of films like Phoonk, Mumbai Meri Jaan and Maan Gaye Mughal-E-Azam. The week seems unpredictable, but out of three movies, Phoonk has opened at 50 per cent, Maan Gaye Mughal-E-Azam and Mumbai Meri Jaan are at 25 per cent, but we expect it to pick up by the weekend."

Multiplex chain PVR, which is also distributing the movie in a few territories reports that Phoonk has opened well. PVR has also given Phoonk a few extra shows than the other two movies at few PVR properties.

A horror film has released after a very long time and to add to it the ‘Phoonk -Dare to watch it alone’ contest gave an extra boost in creating buzz about the film.
