Dhoom:2 takes box office by storm

MUMBAI: The recent Box Office no-show has finally got respite in Dhoom:2, which released on 24 November. The film has mind-blowing cinematography and hi-tech action sequences. The film stars Hrithik Roshan, Aishwarya Rai, Abhishekh Bachchan, Bipasha Basu and Uday Chopra. However, despite a strong star cast, it is Hrithik who has his cake and eats it too. With this film, the actor has broken the jinx that he only gives hits from under his home production.

Dhoom:2 has managed to strike it rich at the box-office with its bumper openings all over.

However, the film did not open in Goa because of the on-going International Film Festival of India (IFFI) as it was feared that the film might hamper the proceedings of the festival.

In Delhi and U.P. too, the film faced some problems in releasing in some multiplexes. Sanjay Ghai, who controls most of the multiplexes in Delhi-U.P. says, “Dhoom:2 could not be released here as the producer – distributor were asking for Mumbai’s share of 60 per cent from the multiplex.”

Single screen theatre Payal Talkies in Gurgaon had acquired Dhoom:2 for a minimum guarantee of Rs 500,000. The film’s no show at some multiplexes, proved to be a goldmine for Payal Talkies.

In Punjab the film opened to packed houses. Amritsar, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Simla registered houseful collections.

Excluding UFOs, DLPs and E-City digitals, Dhoom:2 was released with a record number of around 175 prints in the Bombay circuit.

The film has registered nearly 100 per cent in most of the cinemas in Bombay. Among single screen theatres, in Minerva (Grant Road), the film opened to daily three shows. The theatre has seating of 1,390 with a capacity of Rs 50,624.90 per show. It collected 100 per cent collection by recording Rs 151,874.70.

In Chitra (Dadar) which has a seating capacity of 636 seats, it opened to daily four shows. The matinee shows are on reduced rates, i.e. Rs 16,030.90 being the capacitated one show collection.
