Mumbai: I Am Kalam, the debut feature film of Nila Madhab Panda, will be competing at the 54th BFI London International Film Festival and will also have its international premiere at the 40th Giffoni International Film Festival, Italy which is the largest children’s film festival in the world.
Over 2,000 children from 39 countries attend the festival. I Am Kalam will compete against 12 other titles from across the globe in the ‘ELEMENTS + 10’ section.
A film that exudes lessons beyond one’s sharpest imagination, I Am Kalam is set in Rajasthan and revolves around the quick-witted, inventive child, Chhotu, who despite the poverty stricken and unfavorable circumstances does not hesitate to perpetually maintain a cheerful disposition. One fine day, after having seen the former Indian president, Dr. Kalam’s discourse on education, Chhotu vows to fulfill his dream: to go to school someday. Supported by a talented cast from India and France, the unique look, texture, music and sound of this feature are all set to tell a universal story of a young underdog.
I Am Kalam is produced by Smile Foundation, a non-profit organization that catalyses universal education among underprivileged children. IDream Independent Pictures is the worldwide sales agent.
The film had its first market screening at the 63rd Cannes Film Festival in the Marche Du Film section. Later on during the year, the film will compete in other festivals, namely, 24th CineKid International Film Festival (Netherlands), 14th Buster International Film Festival (Denmark), 33rd Lucas International Film Festival (Germany) and 22nd Vienna International Children’s Film Festival (Austria).
