Manna Dey’s work gathered acclaim and went on to win the coveted Padma Shri award in 1972, Padma Bhushan in 2005 and Dadasaheb Phalke award in 2007. Manna Dey’s musical spanned many decades and has admirers from every generation today.

Manna Dey started his musical career as an Assistant Music Director to Krishna Chandra Dey and later with Sachin Dev Burman. Manna Dey started is musical career as a playback singer in 1942 with the film Tamanna.The song was a duet with Suraiya and became an instant hit. In 1943 he got his first opportunity to sing solo for a film called Ram Rajya.
WATCH VIDEO HERE:Post Independence, Manna was renowned for his golden voice. He was regularly hired by music composer Anil Biswas, Shankar Rao Vyas, SD Burman, Prem Chand, and others. The period was extremely fruitful for Dey, who even sang with India’s nightingale Lata Mangeshkar, for many films. Most memorable were films like Andolan, Ram Vivah and Bootpolish.
Manna Dey’s musical popularity reached it’s zenith, when he sang for Do Bigha Zamin, in 1953. Then, his association with musician-duo Shankar-Jaikishen and superstar Raj Kapoor catapulted his success.
The versatile Manna Dey has also sung for Bhojpuri, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Sindhi and Malayalam films. On October 24, 2013, sadly Manna Dey passed away in Bangalore, after a deteriorating spate of bad health. He was ninety four.
