Mumbai: Last week was one that won’t be forgotten for years to come. Mumbai was attacked by terrorists and amidst that the age old cliche of the film industry – ‘The show must go on’ – took a literal meaning.
Released last Friday in the midst of the Mumbai mayhem were two movies – UTV Motion Pictures’ Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! and Mumbai Mantra’s Sorry Bhai!
Gaining momentum after a measured start, Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! has grossed Rs 46.1 million (Rs 4.61 crore) at the box office in its opening weekend (28 – 30 November).
Sources inform Businessofcinema.com that Sorry Bhai has been running to approximately 30 – 40 per cent occupancies in theatres across India.
UTV Motion Pictures CEO Siddharth Roy Kapur said, "Despite the depressing mood all around us, Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! has managed to do steady business over the weekend. While Friday was slow, collections picked up dramatically over the weekend driven by rave reviews and positive word of mouth. We are confident that the film will hold and have a long sustained run in theaters."
While the movies’ lackluster performance can be blamed on the terror attacks that hit Mumbai, the fact also remains that both the movies do not boast of top bracket stars. While Sorry Bhai stars Sanjay Suri, Sharman Joshi and Chitrangada Singh in the lead, Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! sees Abhay Deol as the protagonist. Nonetheless, the humor quotient in Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!, coupled with Deol’s performance and positive word of mouth seem to have favoured the movie’s performance at the box office.
