The Neerja Bhanot Award is an award of recognition conferred up to once a year by the ‘The Neerja Bhanot Pan Am Trust’ in India to a woman of that country subjected to social injustice, who faces the situation with grit and determination and extends help to other women in similar distress.

This year the award was presented by Sonam Kapoor who will be seen playing a titular role of Neerja in her upcoming Biopic. The award was presented to Subhashini Vasanth.
Subhashini Vasanth is the founder trustee of Vasantharatna Foundation, started in the memory of her husband, Colonel Vasanth V, who was awarded the Ashok Chakra (Posthumous) in 2008 after he lost his life fighting terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir.

The ceremony marked to be the 24th year of the annual award which comprises Rs 1,50,000, a citation and a trophy.
The awardee is selected by a specially constituted jury who look for a woman who shows grit and determination in adversity.
Neerja revisits the story of courage shown by the 23-year-old Mumbai based flight attendant who was posthumously awarded the Ashok Chakra for bravery — the youngest recipient to bag the honour.
Neerja Bhanot was a flight attendant for Pan Am, based in Mumbai, India, who was murdered while saving 359 passengers from terrorists on board the hijacked Pan Am Flight 73 on 5 September 1986. Posthumously, she became the youngest recipient of India’s highest peacetime military award for bravery, the Ashok Chakra.

Complimenting Sonam Kapooris senior talent bundle Shabana Azmi. Veteran star Shabana Azmi will be seen playing the role of Neerja’s mother. The trailer gives us a glimpse of the simple girl Neerja who is unaware of the drastic turn her life is going to take. The hijack scene is shown partly but is gripping by all means.
Neerja is an upcoming 2016 Indian biographical film directed by Ram Madhvani starring Sonam Kapoor in lead titular role. The film will hit theatres on February 19, 2016.[/tps_footer]
