MUMBAI: Deepika Padukone got a dream debut in Bollywood when she starred opposite superstar Shah Rukh Khan in Farah Khan’s 2007 sophomore film ‘Om Shanti Om’. From there, there are has been no looking back for this young actress.

The actress still has to work with big names like Aamir Khan and Salman Khan, but that hasn’t kept her from rising to the top. Be it Ranbir Kapoor in ‘Bachna Ae Haseeno’ or ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’ or Saif Ali Khan in ‘Love Aaj Kal’ or ‘Cocktail’, she’s shone each time.

It’s not been an easy ride though. She’s had flops along the way in the form of ‘Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey’, ‘Aarakshan’ and ‘Desi Boyz’. But she’s always bounced back, and that’s what has kept her in the race to her newfound position as a star.

Shah Rukh Khan in her first film, and in her upcoming film ‘Chennai Express’ too marks the end of a cycle. It may be the start of a new innings in Bollywood. The actress has director Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Ram Leela’ up for release next. Four big films in a year back-to-back with ‘Race 2’, ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’, ‘Chennai Express’ and ‘Ram Leela’ with big directors and huge co-stars; surely Deepika has hit a jackpot!

In her second film, she acted opposite rising superstar (and future boyfriend) Ranbir Kapoor. She had to share the film with two other actresses, but stood out, nevertheless.

She could do masala, but what about a non-masala movie? Imtiaz Ali’s ‘Love Aaj Kal’ showed that she had serious acting chops.

A smaller role in comparison to her previous films, but she was a bright point in this disappointing film.

Deepika Padukone took on a particularly challenging role, playing a blind girl in ‘Lafangey Parindey’. But the film was just decent, even though she was good.

From the urban zone, she finally played a rural girl in this film by Ashutosh Gowariker. It was a minor role, but the film flopped miserably, despite her best efforts.

Deepika played a middle-class girl in this film about reservations. The film bombed, and her role was panned too.

The comeback! Back to her comfort space of an urban girl, she played a spoilt brat in this one. She was praised unanimously for her performance.

The BIG comeback! Playing a nerdy Naina, Deepika Padukone was equally smart and lovable, while also turning the heat on during the big dance numbers. A huge hit for everyone involved, this relaunched Deepika’s career in a way.

Coming around a full circle with Shah Rukh Khan. In a Rohit Shetty film, women tend to not have huge roles, but apparently, she plays an important role in ‘Chennai Express’. Let’s see if she can get us talking about her.

Deepika Padukone has been lucky to work with good directors. She comes under Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s wings for this, her next film. With the actress playing a strong and fiery character, could we see her in a new light?
