Canadian filmmaker selected to direct film in Cannes

Mumbai: MIPCOM has selected Toronto filmmaker Mark Terry to direct a one-hour film based on this year’s Opening Night Gala. Eight filmmakers were selected from around the world to serve as directors of this year’s event – the theme of which is Creativity.

Each filmmaker will be provided with a full crew and complete creative freedom to produce a one-hour film which will later be edited down for upload to MIPCOM’s website. Terry’s creative approach is called The Living Ad. His film will focus on creative and innovative ways of promoting films and television programs through human representation.

"Buyers will display what kind of product they are looking for and sellers will promote the products they have available through a series of body advertising, scene re-enactments, product displays on mobile devices and product-related fashion statements," said Terry.

The only Canadian honored this year was surprised to hear the news only days before attending the market to promote his new documentary feature, The Antarctica Challenge. "I was stunned, but equally thrilled at the honor of being chosen to represent my country among some of the world’s greatest filmmakers at such an internationally prestigious event for this industry."

Terry will be attending MIPCOM this year to promote his latest documentary feature, The Antarctica Challenge. The film will take Terry and his crew to Antarctica to profile recent study on climate change and its effects on the wildlife, the environment and the world. Currently, all rights and territories outside of Canada are available and the film will be ready for a June, 2009 delivery.

The other filmmakers honored this year in Cannes are:

• Devon Brough, Curious Pictures, South Africa

• Catherine Xu, Global Digital Creations Holdings, Hong Kong

• Jean-Luc Barreau, Herisson Vert, Luxembourg

• Samuel Kissous, M6, France

• Sherif Maghraby, Middle East Broadcasting Centre FZ LLC, United Arab Emirates

• Greg Acuna, Pala Flicks, USA

• Manuel J. Garcia, Vidoxmedia Group SI, Spain

Terry has invited all participants of this year’s MIPCOM Opening Gala to come prepared with original means of promoting their products for his film. "It’s free advertising at the world’s biggest television and digital content market and you are the billboard."
