Film Review: Amit Sahni Ki List: Rom-Com For LOL Generation

amit sahani ki 1 [tps_footer]Amit Sahni (Virr Das) is heartbroken when his girlfriend dumps him. In his misery he decides to write a list of the qualities he seeks in his ideal woman.

From then on every woman he meets falls short on one count or another. Either she isn’t a cricket fan, or she’s too high maintenance or she’s simply unpleasant.

Believing he is doomed to a life of loneliness with only one dysfunctional, cooking obsessed, bad advice giving chauvinist friend (Kavi Shastri) for company, Amit decides to meet a girl his mother suggests. Enter Mala (Vega Tomatia). She is everything Amit is not. She is everything that is not on his list and he loves it.

But then comes the kahaani mein twist as Devika (Amanita Near), a successful consultant in well-tailored business suits and an MBA glides into his life. She checks off all boxes on Amit Sahni’s list. The confused boy now has to decide whether he should follow his head or his heart.

Given the nature of the immature script, you can pretty much predict the ending because as the director tells you ever so obviously: opposites attract. In his first Hindi film, director Ajay Bhutan crafts some amusing scenes and keeps you entertained, for the most part.

However the songs are shabbily pictures and add unnecessary heft to the running time. Also the over-use of narrative devices ranges from amusing to silly (such as speech bubbles for Mali’s dog).

Virr Das tries hard and manages to rise above the superficial comedy of his previous roles (Go Goa Gone and Delhi Belly). He is rather endearing in fact. Sadly, the ladies cast opposite him bring nothing to their parts.

A formulaic rom-com from a male perspective, ‘Amit Sahni Ki List ’ is ‘Shaadi Ke Side Effects’ for age 20-something. If that sounds appealing, give it a chance.
