TRAILER REVIEW: ‘Shaadi Ke Side Effects’ – Farhan From Mars, Vidya From Venus!

While ‘Pyaar Ke Side Effects’ took a hilarious look at commitment phobia among men and the usual boy meeting the girl’s parents routine, the trailer for ‘Shaadi Ke Side Effects’ takes those men-women cliches further.

Mallika Sherawat‘s Trisha and Rahul Bose‘s Sid have been changed to another fresh pair in Vidya Balan and Farhan Akhtar, and does their chemistry hit home! The trailer makes it evident that this pairing will work on screen.

The trailer for ‘Shaadi Ke Side Effects’ starts off with the birth of Sid and Trisha’s child Mili, and that’s where the problem between male and female increases further. Farhan Akhtar can’t understand what the child wants when she cries, but Vidya Balan can understand when the baby feels cold, when she wants milk and when she needs to be walked around.

Moreover Farhan Akhtar has to give up his snoring habits just so that it doesn’t wake the child up. So much so that Vidya Balan even asks him to fall off the bed quietly. So much for a happy married life.

Enter Ram Kapoor, who suggests that it’s not harmful to tell a little white lie here and there to keep the relationship going, and voila, when Vidya Balan asks Farhan Akhtar the infamous question – one that a lot of boyfriends/husbands dread – “Do I look fat in this outfit?” – Farhan Akhtar is able to answer the question deftly. The boy has learnt, and how!

The ‘Men are from Mars, women from Venus’ situation has played out on film many times, be it Hollywood (‘When Harry Met Sally’) or Bollywood (‘Hum Tum’), so maybe the shaadi twist in ‘Shaadi Ke Side Effects’ may hopefully keep the cliches to a low. We’re also hoping that the pairing of Farhan Akhtar and Vidya Balan manage to lift the genre from its usual doldrums.

The music is by Pritam – a change from Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, who usually score Farhan Akhtar-starrers. The sole song heard is a Punjabi pop number, not really fresh. What does look good though, is the way the film is shot. The holiday scenes – in particular, the one with Vidya in the car with Farhan – look gorgeous. Also Purab Kohli in a short role where he’s in room 1803 instead of 1804, nice!

Directed by Saket Chaudhary, we hope that ‘Shaadi Ke Side Effects’ does not give the audience any side effects when it releases in February 2014.
