Payal Khandwala – LFW Summer/Resort 2012
From award winning fashion designer to an internationally renowned artist and back to her first profession, Payal Khandwala's creative journey has been full of artistic touches all the way. Calling her collection "Play" Payal's inspiration at Lakmé Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2012 was from abstractionists, Mark Rothko and Barnett Newman. Keeping a minimalistic approach to fashion, Payal chose deep jewel tones with some neutrals and pure white for rich Indian silks, linens and cotton for a line of separates that had a traditional touch. Flowing long silhouettes with a hint of androgynous effects, gave the line an interesting touch. Drapes and wraps were evident while contrasting tones played a striking tune. There was almost a Zen like feel to the garments, which exuded that certain calm and languid look in construction and style. The construction was interesting with angular zips for waistcoats and fluid pleated pants. Layering came alive as wide trousers under comfortable skirts and teamed with cropped tops wrapped around the body offered ease to the wearer. The piece-de-resistance of the show was the stylised high collar jacket with contrast cuffs that proved Payal's skill in construction as well as style. Moving away from rigid trends, Payal Khandwala's collection "Play" was more an offering of individual timeless style that will stand the test of many fashion seasons around the globe.
