Adlabs cranks up domestic distribution biz

MUMBAI: Adlabs’ distribution arm, with offices established in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Mumbai recently, aims to distribute at least eight films annually in these territories.

Businessofcinema.com was the first to report that Percept Picture Company (which has the movie’s distribution rights) had sold the distribution rights of the Mumbai, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Delhi NCR, Uttar Pradesh and Punjab terrorities to Adlabs.

The release of Spider-Man 3 also marks the entry of Adlabs into the domestic distribution of Hollywood films. Spider-Man 3 will be followed by the release of the Sandra Bullock starrer, Premonition.

Spider-Man 3 will be released on 4 May, 2007 in association with Percept Picture Company. Adlabs will release the film with over 250 prints, a major percentage of the total 600 prints being distributed all over India. It will also market the film in these territories. The company has already set up offices in the US and the UK in 2006.

Adlabs Distribution COO Sunir Kheterpal says, “Adlabs is proud to be associated with the release of Spider-Man 3 in India’s major territories by partnering with Percept Picture Company. This association highlights our intent to not only release films independently, but also partner collaboratively with other leading players in the content acquisition and distribution space.”

Having started its domestic distribution business with Mani Ratnam’s Guru in January 2007, Adlabs has also released Black Friday in February 2007, and more recently, Bheja Fry, released last week. Adlabs’ future releases include Priyadarshan’s Dhol, Anubhav Sinha’s Cash, Mudassar Aziz’s Dulha Mil Gaya and Anurag Basu’s Suicide Bomber.

An official release informs that while focusing on distributing A+ films, Adlabs also endeavours to back and distribute films with interesting plots and subjects targeted at niche audiences.
