‘Hermione’ Emma Watson, The New Disney Princess?

LONDON: Our very own ‘Hermione Granger’ is all set to trade in her wizard robes for glass slippers! The word around is that Emma Watson is in talks to play the lead in the movie version of the classic fairy-tale ‘Cinderella’.

The film’s screen play is written by Aline Brosh McKenna and Chris Weitz and is going to be directed by Kenneth Branagh. Cate Blanchett is finalized to play the role of the wicked step-mother.

This won’t be the first time that Emma is rumoured to play ‘Cinderella’. In 2009 Watson was rumoured to be considered to play the lead in a Goth-inspired revamp of ‘Cinderella’ written and directed by Marilyn Manson.

Sources revealed that Disney is believed to have also considered Imogen Poots, Gabriella Wilde and Alicia Vikander for the role of Cinderella. But, it seems Emma Watson is keen on playing the lead in Kenneth Branagh’s ‘Cinderella’.

Fairy-Tale recreates have been big in business lately with ‘Snow-white and The Huntsman’ making $390 million world-wide, ‘Oz: The Great and Powerful’ is taking the theatres by storm! Not to mention Angeline Jolie is all set to play the title role in ‘Maleficent’ inspired by ‘The Sleeping Beauty’.

Meanwhile, the ‘Harry Potter’ star’s latest films include ‘My Week with Marilyn’ ‘The Perks of Being a Wallflower’ which won ‘Best Feature’ at ‘Independent Spirit Awards’. There is no doubt that Emma is slowly making her mark in the industry with her choices of cinema. Her performance in ‘The Perks of Being a Wallflower’ was widely appreciated and applauded.

Watson’s upcoming projects include: Sophia Coppola’s ‘The Bling Ring’ and ‘This is The End’ with co-stars Seth Rogen and James Franco. In 2014 we will see her in ‘Noha’ along with Russell Crow and her ‘The Perks of Being a Wallflower’ co-star Logan Lerman and David Yates’s ‘Your Voice in My Head’

‘Cinderella’ is slated to start shooting in the fall this year with a potential 2014 release. We sure do hope that Emma bags the role! It will be spectacular to see Cate Blanchett and Emma Watson share the big screen!
